A Life #40: Gender(s)

Download (MP3)

This time around the crew of A Life revisits an old topic well due for a revisit. Gender identity is something that the asexual community talks about often and maybe has a unique angle to.

How important your gender identity is to you?

  1. …..As you were discussing the feedback about art from episode #39, it made me think of something else I was going to say but missed. I’m sure you would agree that while some people paint real/still life, others use art and fiction is as a form of fantasy and place to escape the real world. In fiction and art we have dragons and superheros and all of these things we don’t have in real life. We can be whoever we want and play out roles we could only imagine too. Could it be that for some asexuals their art is a way of expressing the lack of sex in their real life by projecting it in there art expressions? Could they be commenting on the sex in society in there art not just there own sexuality? If you lack the desire for sex does it mean you can’t comment on it and explore it though an art form and try to direct its meaning.

You keep talking about the need to have someone make asexual art that is so obvious that everyone that looks at it will know it is asexual and we as a community can point to it say “hahah asexual art” but what would you want as asexual art? What would you draw if you were given this as a task at school? How can you show the lack of sexual attraction in a painting … what is it exactly your hoping to see as asexual art? There is homosexual art because you can show the attraction between two men because there’s something there to show with asexuality its harder because you have to paint the lack of something…. a couple would just be a couple in love or two friends and you can’t say they have sexual attraction or lack it just by looking at them. In Music you can use lyrics to describe the lack of attraction. In an asexual song you can choose words to describe that fact you love someone but unlike in the boys 2 men song, you actually DON’T want to make love to them etc. I’m just trying to work out how you could do the same thing in a painting. (I’m not talking about A cartoon strip with, sure I’ve seen many asexuals already making those) .

Also about the music, nearly every song on radio is about love or relationships in some form. For most people the songs dealing with love go hand in hard with sex. That just because the song isn’t about sex, that sex is implied in a small form when you dig deeper. That even though there not talking about sex they don’t need to because even without saying it most people would know sex is implied in that relationship because that’s how they identify with humans and realtionships that sex is the next step or what happens behind closed doors. If that makes sense?

  3. I did completely forget to bring this up in my comment of the last episode: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Asexuality
Would have been extremely useful for episode 39.

  4. In regards to Hitchcock. I think Ellie said (when Vlad said he was afraid of eggs): “oh, is that why he wrote ‘The Birds’?” or maybe it was… I’m terrible with names and voices.

Should have put that in my previous comment. Sorry about that.

I’m not sure whether or not to comment on Tara being “the female Buddha” (Vlad) as Vlad does know a lot about Buddhism. 😛 But I’m going to be a pain and say “a feminine Bodhisattva” and wander away. Not turning it to a religious conversation so…

  5. Hendrik, R:Special K, I am sorry you didn’t like it. Perhaps, if you can find it, you should try out Product 19 cereal, a manlier version in a red box. It is much heartier and is way more vitamin packed. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
